I wonder what would happen if you added a warming filter (under layers, new adjustment layer, photo filter). I don't know if that would make it look more cheery or even if you'd want it to.
I am looking at these on the tiny screen (which is all I have here) so it is hard to know for sure. But I am thinking there is just some little thing lacking and I don't know what. What if you either brightened or darkened the far background--probably brightened--so that theeye had somewhere inviting and different to travel to?
It's hard for me to give the best feedback from Toby the Libretto, and I apologize.
