It is dead ferns from last year. You can see the new ferns coming up too in the foreground.

OH, yes, they look like our brachen ferns. Is that what they are?

Just looked it up in my book but can't seem to find a name other than fern. It is the most common fern in England. We do also call ferns bracken so maybe that is what people mean by bracken that it is that kind of fern. I had just thought it was another term for fern.
