
You can see how bad the pond is here covered in red algae which I have never seen there other years. And it is only about ankle deep. The lilies are all leaf this year. I suppose that is because the water would normally come up higher and they would be half under water.

Sounds like purple loosestrife. I had a job with the Wildlife commission doing phragmites and loosestrife remediation. They are impossible to get rid of even if you dig them out--a small piece of root remaining is all it needs to grown again.
